God is real, He is sovereign, and He deserves our praise. If this website is about anything, it is first about honoring Him.
As for me, I am not sovereign. If our righteousness is as filthy rags before the Lord (Isaiah 64:4-9) then sometimes I feel less than the filth which clings to them. This sounds harsh, but we all fall short of God’s glory. My Christian walk has not always been strong. At best, the term “lukewarm” might describe how I’ve lived my faith over the years… someone largely going through the motions. Do you know Christians like this? Does this resemble your walk in any way? Like me, many have tipped their hat to the faith, called it their own, but stayed in the shallow end of the Christian pool while avoiding fuller immersion.
But five years ago, things changed for me. Since college I’d had a good career run (in spite of the shallowness of my faith), but then God did two things… he made me a father (to a son and more recently a daughter) and He began speaking to my heart from His written Word.
The Bible is powerful. It is a Living Word, and I challenge you to be changed by it. If your Christian walk (or your unbelief) means flipping the Bible open now and then to random pages, reading for five minutes, and then giving the book back to the dust bunnies… well, do I need to critique this? God’s revelation is not casually given, nor to be casually approached. But to those open and sincere seekers of our Lord, who read the Bible in search of truth, these truths will affect you. For me, the entire difference was to let God’s Word convict me of my sinfulness and to bring about a repentant heart. This heart was then better equipped to further study scripture, and to implement the ideas within… the very definition of spiritual growth.

This idea is at the core of being a “disciple in the making.” When you draw near to God, He will draw near to you (James 4:8). Then you can more clearly see the madness of trying to live independent from He who made you in His image. This is the madness I’m convinced most of us roil within; a mental and spiritual tumult whereupon we look for fulfillment in things we were not created to be fulfilled by. For me, it has caused the abandoning of career plans and worldly success… opting instead to succeed only on His terms, or no terms at all. Doing this has opened my life up to His direction and call, and has landed me in seminary and headed toward the pastorate.
My wife and two children are precious to me, and their support now and going forward has been immeasurable. This journey of sacrifice affects each of us and is not without anxiety. Our intent is to use this website to share our Christian worldview and to provide encouragement and support to those in need. The regularly updated content within will include writings, sermons, and videos that speak to issues of discipleship and the importance of holding to established Christian truths. I invite you to check back to discipleinthemaking.com regularly, and to consider supporting these efforts by checking the “How to Help!” tab on the main page.
Please keep my family in your prayers. And if you want to drop me a note, I’d love to hear from you. Until then, may our God and Father guide your steps and lead you in His ways-
T.
